Hydra Design Labs was tasked by Lordstown Motors with designing an all-new electric pickup truck created specifically for fleet use. Involved from the earliest days of the project – including napkin sketches with the founders of Lordstown Motors – Hydra was responsible for the exterior and interior design, CAD, Class-A surfacing, UI/UX, and CMF design of this revolutionary electric pickup. Following the design and prototyping phases, Hydra followed the project through the start of production including final Class-A surfacing and CMF.

Lordstown Motors

The Mahoning Valley in Ohio is becoming a hotbed for electric vehicle development in the United States and leading the charge in this “Voltage Valley” is Lordstown Motors. Operating from a 6.2 million square foot former General Motors plant, Lordstown Motors plans to produce the industry’s first fully-electric pickup truck designed for fleet use – the Lordstown Endurance.

With over 2.5 million pickups sold in the U.S. each year, there is immense demand for fleet EV trucks. Lordstown Motors will be the first OEM to meet this demand, with production of the fully electric Endurance pickup. Hydra Design Labs helped make history by collaborating with Lordstown Motors for the overall design of the Endurance, including interior and exterior of the vehicle – along with CAD, scale modeling and full-size prototyping.

Electric vehicle

The Lordstown Endurance is a prime example of the synergic relationship between advanced technology and automotive design. Instead of making technology adapt to an existing vehicle design, the capabilities and advancements of new technology were incorporated into the earliest design phases – resulting in a number of industry firsts. Uniquely, the Endurance is powered by four electric motors that are housed inside the truck’s wheel hubs. In addition to lowering the center of gravity and improving performance,

the Endurance’s innovative drivetrain arrangement allowed unconventional design solutions. Since the vehicle no longer had to account for a traditional front-mounted engine, the Lordstown Endurance features a lockable front trunk that takes advantage of the available space. The public’s first glimpse of the new all-wheel drive EV pickup were courtesy of renderings created by Hydra specifically to unveil the new vehicle’s design, followed by a full-scale prototype of the Endurance built in collaboration with Hydra Design Labs.

Our goal with designing the Endurance was to create a rugged platform that could deliver on the demands of fleet-duty pickup. We were able to leverage the layout of the electric drivetrain to explore unique new design solutions. Jon Hull, CEO of Hydra Design Labs
